Use overloading for the various flavours of str2int functions. This has
the benefit of automatically choosing the appropriate function for
aliased types that may be one or the other underlying type, such as
size_t.
Do a mass renaming of all relevant instances.

This function replaces escaped `\r\n` occurences
into normal its view: `\r\n`.
Make this a function, to let it be reusable
for other DSM implementations.

Eliminate the `auto_ptr` usage for core/* ,
since this pointer type has been deprecated in C++11.
Use, as recommended, `unique_ptr` instead.
